Course Description

This course is designed to provide participants to an introduction of Trauma-Informed Play Therapy, where evidence informed trauma treatment with children is translated into a sequence of play-based component modules that celebrate the intersection of the neurobiology of play and the neurobiology of trauma, while honouring current evidence-based approaches in the field of trauma. Each component represents an important dimension of play therapy for trauma treatment and articulates both a specific treatment goal and accompanying interventions.

 

It will also introduce participants to the child’s metaphorical use of the playroom where that is demonstrated through a multitude of case examples and augmented with a variety of prop-based play therapy interventions.

 

An additional emphasis in this introductory course includes introducing participants to engaging parents as partners in the treatment process and the intake and assessment procedures surrounding that.

 

Course Objectives

  1. To understand the key concepts for treating traumatised children

  2. To understand the neurobiology of trauma and play

  3. To be able to establish a trauma safe playroom

  4. To understand and apply the intake and assessment procedures

 

Eligibility

The course is open to professionals of the mental health fields; including psychologists, counsellors, social workers, physicians, child life specialists, nurses, and occupational therapists.

Participants should have at least a Bachelor’s or higher degree in an area of mental health related education, be currently practicing in the field, and have attended Modules 1 to 5 of the Certificate in Play Therapy program.

 

Methodology

  1. Multimedia Lectures

  2. Trainings with opportunities for self-reflection and group discussion

  3. Individual and group activities for processing

 

Certification of Attendance

Certificate of Attendance - will be presented to the participant at the end of each course.

Certificate of Completion - upon completion of additional requirements such as assignments and supervision sessions.

Certificate in Play Therapy - Certificate of Completion for all modules are required.

Certificate Recognition

This Certificate of Attendance is awarded by Healing Hearts Centre and certificate training hours are recognised both by the Association for Play Therapy (USA) and by the Association for Play Therapy (Singapore) for the individual who is working towards their Registered Play Therapist qualifications.

 

Assignments

  1. Take home exam based on the primary text (Play Therapy with Traumatised Children) and other teaching notes

  2. 5 hours of individual supervision while applying the model in at least 15 clinical sessions

  3. 5 self-reflection reports while applying the model in at least 15 clinical sessions
