Course Description

This course is designed to provide participants to an introduction of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), which is a developmentally responsive, play-based mental health intervention for children and adolescents who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioural and relational issues.

This course emphasises the non-directive method of working with children, focusing on the therapeutic relationship and deepening the connection as the therapist learns to enter into the world of the client and to be led by the client.

Course Objectives

  1. To understand the application of the eight basic principles of CCPT as developed by Virginia Axline

  2. To develop skills to create a therapeutic atmosphere with appropriate toys and art supplies to facilitate the growth and self-expression of a child

  3. To learn and practice the ability to establish rapport, engage and respond appropriately to the child during play in order to build a strong therapeutic relationship

  4. To learn to practice effective limit setting during therapeutic play sessions to help a child build a sense of self-responsibility and self-efficacy so as to keep play sessions safe
