Course Description

Parent consultation is an integral component in Adlerian play therapy. In this course, participants will identify barriers to effective parent consultation and come up with a plethora of reasons why as play therapists, there is a need to incorporate parent consultation as a regular component of play therapy practice.


This fun and interactive class will walk participants through the parent consultation process across the four phases of Adlerian play therapy. Utilizing the Adlerian play therapy framework, case examples and video examples will be shown to illustrate session progress, resistant parents. Participants will learn skills unique to connecting with parents of play therapy clients and have new ways to conceptualize and engage parents in the play therapy process. A skills checklist for working with parents of play therapy clients will also be provided.

 

Course Objectives

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. List at least 4 barriers that keep play therapists from doing parent consultation

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the core principles of Adlerian play therapy that relate to parent consultation

  3. Describe at least 3 reasons regarding the importance of conducting parent consultation sessions

  4. Explain at least 2 rationale for incorporating parent consultation when working with children in Adlerian play therapy

  5. List the four phases in parent consultation in Adlerian play therapy

  6. Explain the rationale for going through all 4 phases of Adlerian play therapy parent consultation

  7. List 2 creative ways to include parents in the play therapy process if attending sessions regularly is not an option

  8. Explain the process of building an egalitarian relationship with parents in Adlerian play therapy parent consultation

  9. Describe at least 2 techniques that can be used to build a relationship with parents in Phase 1 of Adlerian play therapy

  10. Demonstrate at least 3 techniques for building a relationship with parents in Adlerian play therapy

  11. Explain the process of exploring the parents’ lifestyle in Adlerian play therapy

  12. Describe at least 2 techniques that can be used with parents to explore parents’ lifestyle in Phase Two of Adlerian play therapy

  13. Demonstrate at least 3 techniques for exploring parent’s lifestyle in Adlerian play therapy

  14. Explain the process of helping parents gain insight in Adlerian play therapy parent consultation

  15. Describe least 2 techniques that can be used to increase parents’ insight in Phase 3 of parent consultation in Adlerian play therapy

  16. Demonstrate at least 3 techniques for helping parents gain insight in Adlerian play therapy

  17. Explain the process of helping parents practice new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving (re-education/re-orientation) in Adlerian play therapy

  18. Describe at least 2 techniques that can be used to help parents practice new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving in Phase 4 of parent consultation in Adlerian play therapy

  19. Demonstrate at least 3 techniques for helping parents practice new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving in Adlerian play therapy

  20. Explain the importance of equipping parents with parenting skills in parent consultation through the Adlerian play therapy framework

  21. Describe at least 2 parenting skills that can be applied with parents in parent consultation sessions

  22. Demonstrate at least 2 parenting skills that can be applied and modelled to parents in parent consultation sessions

Prerequisites

Completion of AdPT 1: Beginning Adlerian Play Therapy

 

Methodology

  1. Multimedia Lectures

  2. Trainings with opportunities for self-reflection and group discussion

  3. Individual and group activities for processing

 

Certification of Attendance

Certificate of Attendance - will be presented to the participant at the end of each course.

Certificate Recognition

This Certificate of Attendance is awarded by Healing Hearts Centre. The training hours are recognised by the Association for Play Therapy (Singapore) for the individual who is working towards their Registered Play Therapist qualifications. The training hours also contribute to the individual working toward their certification in Adlerian Play Therapy.
